Annual family photos deserve better than a JPEG buried in a shared album. Acrylic preserves the things that matter in a portrait - recognisable faces at distance, true skin tones, and the natural light your photographer worked hard to catch.
The defining feature of a good family portrait is recognisability at distance. Walk into the room - can you see whose face that is? On canvas at 16×20, faces under about 8–10″ tall start to soften. On acrylic, the same image stays crisp because there's no weave between viewer and pigment.
Skin tones are the other test. Family portraits cover a wide tonal range - children, adults, sometimes multiple skin tones in the same photo. Acrylic holds the full range without skewing warm (like canvas) or cool (like aluminium).
The biggest mistake is going too small. A 16×20 above a sofa shows three children's faces at distance; an 11×14 in the same place crops the resolution your eyes need.

If your family does annual professional portraits, a row of matched 11×14 prints across a wall - one per year - becomes a piece of art that gains depth over time. Hang the first three in a tight row; leave space for the next ten. The series, read left to right, will outlive any single print on the wall.
Most family portraits are shot at 3:2 (DSLR/mirrorless). Our standard sizes are 4:5. That means a small crop on the long edge - usually fine, since the photographer composed with margin. Check the previewer to make sure no faces or hands get cut off at the edges. If the original composition is tight, choose a slightly larger panel size so the crop has room to breathe.
Ask explicitly for the "full-resolution JPEG" or "print files." Some photographers default to web-export files (around 2,000 px wide); these print fine up to 11×14 but soften at 16×20+. Most photographers will send the higher-resolution file if you ask.
Modern phones produce files that print sharply up to 16×20 in good light. For golden-hour outdoor shots, the result is genuinely impressive. The weak spot is indoor low-light photos - they print softer at large sizes.
Check your contract. Many family photographers grant unlimited personal-print rights; some restrict to their own lab. We'll print whatever you upload, but copyright remains the photographer's.
Cluttered, busy family-photo walls are out of fashion. One deliberately chosen family portrait, hung well at the right scale, is timeless - and creates a different feeling in the room than digital frames or shared albums ever will.
Most families update every 2–3 years for the "main" focal piece, then build a hallway series of annual smaller prints around it. Updating the main portrait yearly is fine, but creates wasted backstock; updating less than every 5 years feels static.
